Taiwan's Formosa Plastics Group is seeking permission from the Vietnamese government to build a petrochemical complex with an annual refining capacity of 14 million tons of crude oil in the central province of Ha Tinh.

If approved, the complex will occupy 1,591 hectares of land in the Vung Ang economic zone.

The complex will directly provide jobs for 4,000 laborers and indirectly for 5,000 others during its construction and operation.

The Taiwanese firm also advanced its interest to build a 500-MW thermal power plant near the petrochemical complex to provide a source of electricity.

Vietnam has planned to put into operation between five and six oil refineries with a combined refining capacity of 30 million tons of crude oil a year by 2015 to meet the country’s rising domestic demand for petroleum products. (Investment)
