Vietnam Agro Material Jan-Sept Imports See Sharp Fall
Vietnam spent US$5.17 billion on importing nine major agricultural materials in the first nine months of 2009, with sharp decreases in almost all products, the Government’s General Statistics Office (GSO) said.
Among them, imports of vegetable and animal oil, fertilizers, and timber and wood products decreased most, the GSO said.
Between January and September, imports of vegetable and animal oil decreased 28.4% to US$386 million from a year ago, while imports of fertilizers fell 22.5% to US$1.035 billion, and timber and wood products dropped 15.2% to US$630 million.
The country also witnessed a decrease in pesticide imports by 14.2% against the same period last year to US$334 million, and paper imports were down 5.3% to US$546 million.
The GSO figures also report that imports of animal feed decreased 2.9% in value to US$1.402 billion, seafood- down 4.1% to the value of US$220 million.
Imports of wheat, however, slightly rose 1.0% in value to US$969 billion, according to the GSO. (GSO)
