EC Proposes to Extend Anti-dumping Taxes on Vietnam’s Shoes
The European Commission (EC) has proposed to extend the imposition of anti-dumping taxes on shoes originated from Vietnam for 15 more months despite the opposition from northern EU member nations and major makers, the Communist Party of Vietnam said on its website Oct 8.
The EC’s decision will be sent to relevant sides this weekend and considered by the European Council on November 12.
If approved, the extension is scheduled to come into force from January 3, 2010.
The EC started imposing anti-dumping duties of 16.5% and 10% on shoses made in China and Vietnam, respectively, Oct 2006.
Global corporations such as Adidas AG and one of Adidas's main suppliers, the giant Hong Kong-based shoe manufacturer Yue Yuen Industrial Holdings Ltd., have fought hard to end the duties, which were set to expire last year.
Early September, the Foreign Trade Association (FTA) which represents European importers and retailers urged the EC to remove the duties on Vietnamese and Chinese makers’ products. (CPV, The People)
