VinaPhone, a unit of the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and among the three largest mobile network operators in the country, said that it had revenues of VND20.519 trillion ($1.1 billion) in 2009.

The company signed up over 10 million new mobile subscribers during the year, raising its total number of active subscribers to 27 million, accounting for 30% of the country’s mobile market share, compared to 26% in 2008, VinaPhone said.

In 2009, the operator developed 6,000 new base transceiver stations, increasing its total BTS to 13,000 by the year’s end.

2009 also marked VinaPhone’s important breakthrough in the local mobile industry, with the first launch of third-generation (3G) services in Vietnam in October. It has invested $1 billion to develop the network.

In November, VinaPhone joined the Conexus Mobile Alliance and will start to provide 3G international roaming service in 2010.

With the target to occupy the large market share in Vietnam in 2010, the company will strive to develop five million additional subscribers and have revenues of VND27 trillion. (vinaphone)
