Vietnam is forecast to face a power shortage of between 3 billion kWh and 4 billion kWh this year due to a possible lower hydropower generation capacity triggered by the decreased water levels at hydropower lakes nationwide.

Dao Van Hung, Chairman of the state-run Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) made the statement on Jan 10, elaborating that hydropower lakes nationwide will lack 12 billion cubic meters of water for electricity generation in 2011.

Unstable operation of many newly-built thermal power plants nationwide will also worsen the electricity shortage.

Meanwhile, the domestic demand for electricity this year will reach 117.6 billion kWh, including 56.14 billion kWh in the first half of 2011, rising 17.63% and 18.3% from a year earlier, respectively.

In order to ensure sufficient power supply for the national economy, EVN will operate 12 power turbines with a combined capacity of 2,198 MW this year.

The group will also buy 64.5 billion kWh of electricity from local and foreign sources while striving to produce 48.1 billion kWh in 2011.

It is seeking a loan of VND13 trillion to buy FO and DO as input materials for its gas-fuelled power plants to generate 3.8 billion kWh in H1. (VoV, Youth)
