The Intesa Sanpaolo Group is the leading banking group in Italy with about 11 million customers and nearly 5,700 branches, and is one of the top banking groups in Europe. The Group is the leading provider of financial products and services to both households and businesses in Italy, notably of banking intermediation (a 16 percent market share in customer loans and 17 percent in customer deposits), leasing (19 percent), pension funds (25 percent), asset management (25 percent), factoring (33 percent) and bancassurance (37 percent).
The Group also has strategic operations in Central and Eastern Europe and in Middle Eastern and North African countries, where it currently serves 8.3 million customers through over 1,700 branches and is among the top players in several countries such as Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia, Albania, Egypt, Hungary, Bosnia Herzegovina and Slovenia.
The presence of the Group in Asia dates back to 1981, when the representative office in Beijing was opened. The Hong Kong Hub is responsible for the activities of the Asian branches (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo) and representative offices (Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, Mumbai, Seoul).
Intesa Sanpaolo has had a representative office in Ho Chi Minh City since 2008 but has no license to operate a branch in the country yet. The office, located at the Gemadept Tower, is directed by Mr Tomaso Andreatta.
Since arriving in Vietnam, Intesa Sanpaolo has focused on trade finance and the infrastructure sector and, in 2010, it was engaged in capital markets operations involving Vietnamese Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and PetroVietnam, the state-owned oil company. The office in Vietnam also supports trade and investment activity of Italian companies.
In May 2011 IntesaSanpaolo signed its first agreement with Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) to support corporate clients investing in both countries. Under the agreement Intesa Sanpaolo will cooperate with Vietcombank through its corporate and investment banking division to offer banking and advisory services to clients starting up or expanding businesses in Vietnam. Similar support will be offered to Vietnamese companies investing in Italy.
Intesa Sanpaolo Corporate and Investment Banking Division, supports the balanced and sustainable development of corporate clients and financial institutions with a medium-long term view, both nationally and internationally, serving as a “global partner” with an in-depth knowledge of corporate strategies and a complete range of services. Its main activities include M&A, structured finance and capital markets carried out through Banca IMI, as well as leasing, factoring and merchant banking. The Division is present in 29 countries through a specialist network made up of branches, representative offices and subsidiary banks focused on corporate banking to facilitate the cross-border activities of its customers.
