WB Supports Irrigation Modernisation Project
The World Bank (WB) and the State Bank of Vietnam on August 19 in Hanoi signed an agreement for the US$157.8 million credit to help raise farm household income and further reduce rural poverty in Vietnam.
The Vietnam Water Resources Assistance Project, which was approved by the WB in March 2004, supports the development of national programmes for irrigation modernisation and dam safety. It has also begun the long process of integrated development in the Thu Bon River basin in the Central region of Vietnam and Project Management and Capacity Building.
State Bank governor Le Duc Thuy said: "The government of Vietnam has made agricultural modernisation a top priority in our Strategy of Socioeconomic Development 2001-2010, as an instrument of growth and poverty reduction. The project will support the government's strategic goals of agriculture modernisation, improvement in water resources management, and natural disaster mitigation."
