IT Applications Faciliate Environment

A seminar on applying information and communication technology in environmental matters, held by the Environmental Protection Agency in Hanoi on September 8, 2004, showed a low application of information technology in environmental management in Vietnam.

Hoang Duong Tung, director of the Centre of Surveillance and Data under the Environmental Protection Agency, presented the current situation and orientations for information technology application in environmental management. The target is that by 2010 Vietnam will have caught up with other developed countries in the region in infrastructure development, technology, human resources and investment in the application of information technology.

The major content of the target is to build a legal framework for information technology in environmental management, combine a target of boosting information technology application with environmental protection strategies, develop information technology infrastructure and public services with an e-Government, build an environmental information network, develop an environmental database and automate data collection and processing.

Investment will also be focused on the national environmental surveillance system, putting geographic information technology and surveillance into use, using open source technology to develop applications, providing information for the community and especially investing in developing human resources.
