National Environmental Protection Strategy to 2020 Announced

The Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) recently announced the national environmental protection strategy to 2020, with a vision to 2030.

 

The strategy, adopted by the Prime Minister in Decision 1216/QD-TTg dated September 5, 2012, aims at, by 2020 basically controlling, limiting and, by 2030 preventing, and reversing the trend of increased pollution, degradation and depletion of natural resources and loss of biodiversity to improve the quality of the living environment, enhance the capacity and activeness to respond to climate change, and serve sustainable national development.

 

The strategy sets out major orientations for environmental protection for the period till 2020, including: (1) Preventing and controlling environmental pollution roots; (2) Restoring polluted and degenerated environment; accelerating water supply and sanitation services; (3) Effectively and sustainably exploiting and utilising natural resources; conserving nature reserves and biodiversity; and (4) Building up the capacity of responding to climate change and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

 

This text will be a general and comprehensive directive for national environmental protection, a guide for sectors and agencies to build and implement five-year environmental protection plans to contribute to the successful realisation of sustainable national development objectives.
