On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Vietnam-Malaysia diplomatic relations, Vietnam Business Forum talked with Mr Theng Bee Han, President of Malaysia Business Chamber in Vietnam. Duc Quan reports
How do you evaluate the success of Malaysian business community in Vietnam in recent years?
It is an undeniable fact that every country across the globe has been hit hard economically over the last decade, thus churning both successful and not-so-successful stories from respective investors. It is no exception to Malaysian investors in Vietnam either during this period of time. Nonetheless, I would say successful investments by Malaysians marginally outweigh the latter. Fortunately, the minority's spirits to persist on are not at all dampened by the challenges and hiccups faced thus far and are mature enough to foresee the heap of business opportunities ahead which Vietnam has to offer.
What has Malaysian Business Chamber done to attract Malaysian investors to Vietnam?
We function as a window for many of our fellow Malaysians investors. Experiences and information about getting a business head start in Vietnam are without any qualms, shared generously. Transparency on the do's and don'ts is what we practice toward any legitimate business enquiries which are within our purview, so as to assist and smoothen the new investors' pathways in Vietnam.
In what sectors do you think both sides can strengthen cooperation in 2013 and in a couple of years?
In my view, those sectors topping the list (in no sequence order) would be the retail market, service providers particularly those in education, manufacturing, financial services, certified professionals and consultants.
What improvement do you think that Vietnamese Government should do to support Malaysian companies in Vietnam and to attract more to come?
Vietnam has indeed glided very well to capture the global attention in being recognized as one of the fast-paced, emerging market in Asia over the last decade. Kudos!
Vietnam's popularity as a top spot for business ventures in comparison with its Asian counterparts by investors as of to date should to be put to good use by both the Vietnamese Government and Vietnamese based private corporations. In fact, the latter ought to interpret the country's popularity positively by approaching the Malaysian corporations on its own accord for any kinds of business ventures. It is quite certain that our Malaysian corporations and individual entrepreneurs would welcome with open arms, visitations by potential Vietnamese counterparts in our homeland for bilateral business benefit purposes.
With the steady increase of both Malaysian and non-Malaysian members in MBC over the last couple of years, we are glad to be acknowledged as one of primary business bridging channels in Vietnam between the two countries. Heartiest thank to all for your trust and support.
