On October 31, 2016, the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) officially announced the revision to passenger service charge (PSC), also known as airport tax.

The revised rates will come into effect on January 1, 2017, including PSC to ASEAN countries. The new rate will be 73 ringgits (US$17) for international flights at all airports across the country. Domestic flights will be subject a charge of 11 ringgits.

The PSC tier for travel to ASEAN countries is 35 ringgits (US$8.30) per departing passenger. With this regulation, Malaysia was the first ASEAN country to apply the new PSC tier for ASEAN member countries. According to Mavcom, this policy aims to further promote travelling among ASEAN member countries.
