Vietnam Seeks Foreign Investment to Develop Mekong Delta Airports

The Government of Vietnam has given the green light to foreign companies, allowing them to set up joint venture with local partners to develop and operate Can Tho and Phu Quoc Airports in the Mekong Delta.

The decision was made at the conference held in Can Tho city in mid-February to discuss ways to develop the Mekong delta’s communication systems, airports and seaports by 2010.

The two airports must be designed in a way that meets the inevitable needs for future growth and expansion, the government said, adding that they must be developed quickly to facilitate goods and passenger transport.

The government wants to develop Can Tho Airport into an international airport in the near future and puts pressure on the Southern Airports Authority to prepare a design and investment plan, even if it has to hire a foreign consultants to get the job done.
