PM Demands Leader Reshuffle at State-run Shipping Giant

Vietnam Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has assigned the Government Office to inform the Ministry of Transport to replace the general director of the State-run Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) after hearing detailed reports about his performance on March 1.

Accordingly, Vinalines General Director Ha Duc Bang will likely be appointed to work at the Ministry of Transport after displaying weaknesses in business management and on the issue of staff unions. Details, however, are not made available.

The Ministry of Transport has been entitled to find a new competent boss for Vinalines, the Vietnam’s largest shipping corporation, which has 40 subsidiary enterprises and runs 100 seagoing ships with combined loading capacities of 1.1 million metric tons.

The Prime Minister also requested the governmental inspection agency to clarify those responsible for mistakes at other large State-owned corporations including Vietnam Steel Corp. (VSC), Vietnam Airlines and Vietnam Posts and Telecoms Corp. (VNPT).

VSC will face inspections into the reason for the sudden increase of steel prices in 2003 and early 2004 while Vietnam Airlines will have inspections into the fuel scandal and petitions of Vietnam Airlines employees on financial-associated mistakes made by Vietnam Airlines General Director.
