10th Round on Vietnam's Bid to WTO to Open in May

Vietnam will start the 10th multilateral negotiation round on its accession to the World Trade Organization in May in Geneva, announced spokesman of the Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Dzung on March 29.

The session will focus on completing Vietnam's reports on its efforts to gain membership of the world's biggest trade body, Dzung added without revealing any further details.

Vietnam hopes to join the WTO late this year. To date, it has completed six bilateral deals including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, the European Union and Singapore, and nine multilateral negotiation rounds on its accession to the WTO.

The nation in the first three months of this year held 15 sessions of bilateral talks with WTO members, including, the US, Canada, China, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, India and several Latin American countries.

At a recent meeting with Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An in Geneva, WTO General Director and Secretariat members have all voiced their support for Vietnam's bid into the WTO.

According to the National Committee for International Economic Cooperation, the latest round of negotiations between Vietnam and the US, which took place in Washington, DC, on March 14-16, achieved positive results. The talks were held to discuss a breakdown of goods and services that Vietnam will open up to US providers once admitted to the WTO.
