The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) on December 13 commenced the construction on a container production factory, the first of its kind in Vietnam, in Lai Vu commune, Kim Thanh district, northern Hai Duong province.

The factory is designed to make 30,000 TEUs (twenty feet equivalent units) a year to meet the increasing demand for containers of local and international shipping fleets operating in Vietnam.

Dao Van Binh, director of Vinashin Container Co., said local demand for containers might increase to 100,000-135,000 TEU by 2010.

The factory, with a total investment of US$22 million, is a joint venture between Vinashin (55 per cent) and Taiwan’s Toong Goen Enterprise (45 per cent).

The plant, which is scheduled for operation in late 2006 and has a lifespan of 30 years, will employ 1,000 workers in the Hai Duong province.
