Work Begins on US$421.9Mln Thermal Power Plant in Mekong Delta
The construction of the VND6.67 trillion (US$421.9 million) million thermal power plant, the first project of the O Mon Thermo-electric Power Centre, the largest of its kind in the Mekong Delta, was kicked off in Can Tho city on February 26.
Of the total investment, as much as 85 per cent will come from the Japanese Government's preferential loan made through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The remainder is contributed from EVN’s reciprocal capital.
The construction of the 600MW plant is undertaken by a group including the Can Tho Thermal Power Company, the consulting firm TEPSCO, the Misubishi Heavy Industries Ltd and the Mitsubishi Corporation.
The O Mon plant 1 will have two turbine groups to produce 3.6 billion kWh of electricity annually. The first turbine is scheduled to start operation in late 2008 and the second in 2010.
The plant is one of ten power plants built with loans from the Japanese Government and one of four power plants planned for the O Mon Thermo-electric Power Center.
The O Mon power center, which comprises of four power plants with total capacity of 2,800 MW, will be built at a cost of US$2 billion and is the second largest in southern Vietnam after the 3800MW Phu My power center already in operation. Every year, the center will use around 4 billion cu.m of gas, including between 800 million-1 billion cu.m of gas for its first plant.
