Vietnam Business Forum interviewed Nguyen Tran Bat, president and general director of the InvestConsult Group, a leading consultant group in Vietnam, about its success and competitiveness.
Can you introduce to us the activities of the InvestConsult Group?
After around 18 years’ development, INVESTCONSULT LTD has become a group of leading private professional consultancy companies in Vietnam, providing multi-field services, such as investment, business, legal, intellectual property and financial management consultancy, INVESTCONSULT GROUP now has 250 staff members and over 100 free lancers working in Hanoi (headquarters), Ho Chi Minh City (office in the South), Can Tho city (branch) and many other provinces and cities (project offices) nationwide.
We have implemented various projects, including projects in the private sector, ODA projects and projects for international institutions and organisations including WB, IFC and UNDP, and trade projects. We provide consultancy services to customers, who are famous groups in the world such as Coca Cola, GE, Honda, Toyota, Siemens and Alcatel, and leading groups in Vietnam, such as VNPT, and Vietnam Airlines, as well as banks, and major industrial parks, such as Dung Quat and the open economic zone of Chu Lai.
What do you think about the present and future of anti-dumping court cases which have become popular for Vietnamese enterprises?
In Vietnam, anti-dumping has not been perceived properly yet. The issue, in fact, relates to anti-dumping law. The Government knows the issue and the Government is the only negotiator but does not know that enterprises will be directly impacted. More importantly, however, Vietnam has not co-operated fully with markets or anti-dumping agencies in the markets. We do not disseminate information and experience to companies. In other words, we have nothing to do with anti-dumping in our emerging economy. We do not have a structure for production costs of enterprises, trade promotion activities to help partners understand further about our enterprises while our enterprises rely only on protectionism. Therefore, it is difficult for Vietnamese enterprises to prove they do not dump. The Government should promote further dissemination and education to enterprises and people, helping them understand better about anti-dumping court cases and have more experience to prevent such cases. This is also a solution for protecting the economy.
What are plans of INVESTCONSULT prior to Vietnam’s accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO)?
For a long time, Vietnamese enterprises in general and INVESTCONSULT in particular have exerted our efforts to exist. I believe only in people, their operation, and myself only in running our business. If Vietnam has good institutions, operation capability for the institutions will bring strength into full play. The more the Government provides freedom for enterprises, the more rapidly they develop. I have developed plans and wished staff members to become my accompanists. We have to generate long-term beneficial jobs, turning labour use value into labour willingness. This is my motto towards my staff members. I do not want to take measures to prevent risky decisions by my staffs. Therefore, I always desire that my staff have a continuing passion for further development.
During Vietnam’s international integration into the world community, many lawyers of our companies have joined international professional organisations such as the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA), the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA) and the International Trademark Association (INTA), and this offers them an opportunity to exchange information and experience with foreign colleagues.
