US$62.5Mln Tunnel under HuongRiver to Be Built
Vietnam’s central Hue city is seeking the Government’s nod to construct a car tunnel under the Huong River at an estimated cost of VND1 trillion (US$62.5 million), state media said.
The proposed tunnel is aimed to ease the traffic burden on current operational bridges spanning the river running through the center of Hue city.
The tunnel, which is scheduled to have total length of over one kilometer with a 576m section running under the riverbed, is planned to have four to six lanes.
The People’s Committee of the Thua Thien-Hue province said the tunnel would be a savior for the city’s currently overloaded system of bridges.
However, many residents in Hue, the nation’s ancient royal capital listed among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, are worried that the project would negatively impact on their centuries-old city attractions.
