The Vietnam Railway Department is working on a plan to build a railway tunnel through the Hai Van Pass with an estimated cost of US$200 million, state media reports.

The planned tunnel is aim to improve safety and transport capacity of the trans-national line.

The tunnel is expected to be nearly 10km long and wide enough for dual tracks. It will help cut the transport time on the route by two hours.

According to the Department, the Hai Van Pass has always been a bottle-neck on the route due to the difficult terrain despite a new motorway tunnel put into operations last year.

Vietnam now has 2,600 km of railways in total, most of which are now degrading and should be upgraded.
