Few FDI Projects for Agriculture
According to the International Cooperation Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam attracted 1,095 foreign-invested projects valued US$5.2 billion in the fields of agriculture, forestry and fisheries as of September 2006. Of the sum, 805 projects worth US$3.9 billion are still effective, accounting for 12 per cent of the total number of FDI projects in Vietnam and 7 per cent of FDI investment capital. Foreign investors mainly come from France, the US, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.
Since 1995, FDI projects mainly invested in timber processing, forest products, cultivation, sugarcane cultivation, animal feed and aquaculture. Notably, the farm product and food processing industry accounted for 49.2 per cent, followed by forestation at 22.6 per cent and farming 8.2 per cent. Binh Duong Province attracted the most FDI projects in Vietnam with 104 projects, followed by Ho Chi Minh City with 90 projects and Dong Nai with 52 projects. Apart from high-value sugarcane cultivation and afforestration projects, most projects for the agriculture, fishery and forestry have medium and small business investment sizes.
