The Vietnam government has just ratified a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) development plan between 2006-10, working out specific targets for local SMEs.

The plan aims to boost the development pace and enhance the competitiveness of SMEs while creating a healthy competition environment.

Specifically, in the next five years, the country will set up an additional 320,000 SMEs, generating 2.7 million new jobs and training more 165,000 skilled laborers for SMEs.

On average, the number of SMEs in Vietnam will increase by 22 per cent each year in the five-year phase. In disadvantaged provinces, the sum of newly-established SMEs will soar by 15 per cent annually.

In the coming five years, between 3-6 per cent of total SMEs will export products to foreign markets.

The plan also draws out nine major tasks and seven solutions to realize the aforementioned blueprint.
