Vietnam shipped US$29.5 million worth of sports shoes and leather products to South Africa in the first eleven months of this year, an increase of 48 per cent on-year, the Ministry of Trade’s Information Center reports.

In the first eleven months, the Southeast Asian country earned a total of over US$3.2 billion from footwear exports, an increase of 19.3 per cent on-year.

Currently, Southeast Asia accounts for only 3.97 per cent of South Africa’s footwear and leather imports. In addition, export prices to the foreign country are quite high so it is a lucrative market for Vietnamese exporters.

The footwear industry of Vietnam is expected to earn export revenues of US$3.45-3.55 billion this year, compared with $3 billion last year.

Vietnam and South Africa officially established diplomatic relations in December 1993. Trade between the two countries reached US$250 million in 2005, up 66.67 per cent against 2004.
