Vietnam Easing Jam Exports to Serve Local Market

Vietnam’s jam producers said that they will reduce exports this month in order to fulfill demand of local consumers in the upcoming traditional Tet festival, after enjoying several peaks in jam export late last year.
 
In December alone, Vietnamese enterprises shipped $438,000 worth of all kinds of jams abroad, up 2.5 per cent compared with November, but as much as 544 per cent from October.
 
Jam was selling for prices of $0.9-$2.2 per kilo.
 
Major consumers of Vietnamese jams are Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia, which also enjoy traditional Tet festivals and the US, Australia and Germany where numerous Vietnamese people are living.
 
Among them, the US was the biggest consumer of Vietnamese jams with total expenditure for the products amounting to $210,000, accounting for 48 per cent of Vietnam’s total. Following are Malaysia and Australia with $80,000 and $38,000, respectively.
 
In late 2006, the number of Vietnamese enterprises exporting jams reached 18, up 6 from Nov and 15 from Oct.
 
Of which, Hai Minh Trade and Production Co. posted highest revenue of nearly $110,000 with the US being the biggest outlet. Vietnam ORANA Joint Venture Co. took second with $81,000 export revenue in December, mostly from Malaysia and Sri Lanka. (www.rauhoaquavn.vn))
