Vinalines Opens Container Route from Vietnam to Hong Kong
Vinalines Shipping Co, a unit of Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines), opened a container shipping route from Vietnam to Hong Kong last Friday, local media reported.
The route begins at listed Doan Xa Port, Haiphong City.
Vinalines shipping arm will operate one trip a week, it added.
The Vietnam-Hong Kong route is the start of Vinalines’ plan to expand market share and improve service quality, a company official said. “More routes will be opened after this route.”
Vinalines Shipping Co. will operate secondhand Japanese-made Vinalines Pioneer on the route.
The vessel, built in 1997, can carry 588 TEUs and travel at a speed of 15.3 nautical miles per hour.
The Vinalines unit is now operating 15 ships with loads of 172,744 tons, including 11 container carriers with loads of 7,541 TEUs and four dry cargo freighters.
In 2006, the company posted a total turnover of VND764 billion (US$47.75 million), 70 per cent of which came from container shipping. (Vietnam & World Economy)
