Northern Shipbuilder Builds Most Modern Dockyard in Vietnam
Pha Rung Shipbuilding Co. kicked off construction on a big shipyard, the most advanced in Vietnam to date, in northern port city Haiphong.
The Song Gia shipyard costing nearly VND5,000 billion (US$312.5 million) will cover 100 ha in Minh Duc Town, Thuy Nguyen District, Haiphong City.
As completed by late 2007, the dockyard will be capable of building 26 oceangoing ships a year, with loads ranging between 50,000 DWT and 70,000 DWT.
“The building of this shipyard will help Haiphong City retain its position as the largest shipbuilding hub in Vietnam and upgrade Vietnam into one of biggest shipbuilders in the world,” a company official said.
The dockyard will build ships for both domestic and foreign shipping firms, he added.
The Haiphong City-based shipbuilder is running a shipyard in the city, which is currently one of the largest shipbuilding facilities in Vietnam. This facility can build ships with loads up to 30,000 DWT.
Pha Rung Shipyard, a key member of state-run Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin), targets revenues of VND1,600 billion (US$100 million) in 2007, more than double the amount it earned in 2006. (Vietnam & World Economy, Pioneer)
