Central Hydropower Joint Stock Company [September 12] kicked off construction on a wind-to-power plant in central Binh Dinh province with an investment of nearly US$36 million, local media reported.

The plant will be the biggest of its kind in Vietnam in term of capacity, daily newspaper Thanh Nien (young people) posted without mentioning capacity of the plant.

The plant named Phuong Mai 3 wind-to-power plant will be located in local Nhon Hoi economic zone.

Once operation, the plant is expected to turn out over 55 million kWh of electricity annually.

Vietnam is estimated to have the greatest wind-to-power potential in Southeast Asia. The coastal provinces of Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan, the central highlands provinces of Lam Dong, and the Mekong Delta provinces of Ben Tre, Tra Vinh and Soc Trang have been singled out as successful areas for wind power generation.

In 2005, only a modest volume of renewable energy was produced in the country, including 1MW by the solar-based system, 1.2 MW by the wind-to-power system and 2.4 MW by the garbage-based system. (Young People)
