Vietnam Needs US$5Bln for Urban Infrastructure Development
Vietnam needs around US$5 billion to develop urban infrastructure, mainly focusing on water supply, water drainage water and wastewater treatment, and urban solid waste management works, in the coming time.
The figure was released at a workshop on water and environmental hygiene issue, jointly held by the Vietnam Construction Ministry and the Finnish Foreign Affairs Ministry in Hanoi September 12.
Of the sum, VND15 trillion (nearly US$1 billion) is estimated for urban water supply projects, VND44 trillion (nearly US$3 billion) for urban water drainage and wastewater treatment works, and VND16.5 trillion (over US$1 billion) for urban solid waste management activities.
According to the latest survey, Vietnam now has nearly 10,000 communes and 729 urban areas including two special urban areas, three grade 1 urban areas, 14 grade 2, 43 grade 3, 36 grade 4, and 631 urban areas grade 5.
The country’s urbanization rate reaches 27.5 per cent, together with urban population growth rate of 2.9 per cent per year. Vietnam’s population is estimated to double by 2020 from current more than 84 million. (Local sources)
