The state-owned Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) plans to inaugurate an airplane leasing joint stock firm next week, the first of its kind in Vietnam.

The new company will have a registered capital of US$200 million, with four foundation shareholders, including Vietnam Airlines, PetroVietnam and VNPT, beside BIDV.

In the short term, the company will buy four Boeing 787 Dreamliners to lease to the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines.

The airplane leasing firm will exploit traditional fight routes as well as open new routes in Vietnam.

Tran Bac Ha, general director of BIDV, said in July that his bank saw a market for airline leasing as Vietnamese carriers do not have enough capital to buy their own aircrafts. (VNA)
