The Managing Board of Thermo-power Project No. 3 under the Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) said that it will invest US$5 billion to build a 4,400-megawatt thermo-power complex in southern Soc Trang province.

To cover an area of 283 hectares, the Long Phu thermal power center, to be located in local Long Phu district, will consist of three two-turbine coal-fired power plants, the Investment & Finance newspaper reported November 19.

Of the plants, 1,200-MW Long Phu 1 is due for construction between 2013 and 2014. Meanwhile, construction of 1,200-MW Long Phu 2 is expected to start from 2015, and 2,000-MW Long Phu 3 between 2016 and 2017, it said.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry recently said that provincial authorities of Soc Trang have recently given the green light to construction of the thermo-power center.

Vietnam, now heavily reliant on hydroelectricity, will shift its energy source structure with priority given to thermal power sources after 2010, with total capacity of thermal power plants reaching 15,497 MW by 2011; 27,261-27,811 MW by 2015; 36,721-40,111 MW by 2020; and 52,871-65,111 MW by 2025.
