Vietnam will kick off construction of the national first nuclear power plant in 2010 in central Ninh Thuan province at a capacity of 2,000 megawatts, said State-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN).

The $4 billion plant is expected to generate between 14 billion and 15 billion kWh of power annually when fully operational by 2020, EVN attributed.

Electricité de France (EDF) pledged to assist Vietnam in terms of machinery installment, radioactive safety and operation, and response to nuclear breakdowns, the group noted.

Vietnam intends to construct two or three nuclear power plants with combined capacity of 8,000 MW costing $16 billion through 2025.

The country is facing an adverse power thirst, which is estimated at 8.6 billion kWh this year due to increasing energy demand. (Investment)
