Vietnam plans to build an additional 12 thermal power plants with a combined capacity of between 6,300 MW and 7,000 MW in the northern key economic zones by 2015, according to the national power development plan through 2015 and span to 2025, or plan VI.

After 2015, between one and two thermo-power plants with capacity of between 600 MW and 1,200 MW each will be built in the region to ensure sufficient power supply, the Cong Thuong newspaper said.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, state-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN), and some relevant agencies are studying sites for constructions of new coal-fired power plants with big capacities so as to meet expected fast-growing rate in the region.

By 2050, the capital city of Hanoi will become a big economic zone of Vietnam and in the Asia-Pacific region; therefore, its power consumption is forecast to reach around 3,800 MW in the initial phase, and then climb to between 9,000 MW and 10,000 MW.

Power-thirsting Vietnam plans to put in use 135 power plants with combined capacity of 48,744 MW from now to 2015. (Industry and Trade)
