The Animal Husbandry Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) January 13 opened an extraordinary meeting with participation of almost all of milk production and consumption companies, local media reported.

The meeting aimed to seek ways to help cow breeders, who have thrown away their milk because it is unmarketable.

Hoang Kim Giao, head of the department said northern Hanoi, Vinh Phuc and Bac Ninh provinces now has nearly 8,300 milch cows, with daily output of 55 tons. There are 53 milk collecting shops in the provinces.

Giao said that to help farmers, milk collecting shops should sign contracts with milk companies and breeders to buy milk, advising the shops not to throw away milk as the factories reduce purchase.

He asked milk companies to buy almost all of milk for farmers at negotiated prices while announcing milk standards and quality.

General Director of Hanoimilk, Tran Dang Tuan, said the company is now able to buy 150 tons of milk a day, adding that the volume may be risen by 30 per cent-40 per cent if it buys directly from the breeders.

But Vinamilk and International Dairy Product JSC, one of the biggest milk processing firms in Vietnam, showed their hesitation, explaining that they have to check milk quality.

Currently, Vinamilk is offering milk at VND7,000-VND7,800 a kilogram, while Hanoimilk is offering VND6,000-VND6,600 and International Milk JSC offering VND7,000 a kilogram. (Saigon Liberation, Vietnam Agriculture)
