Vietnam's Pepper Export up 63 per cent in Volume in Jan-Feb

Vietnam was estimated to export 16,000 tons of pepper worth US$36 million in the first two months of 2009, a sharp rise of 63 per cent in volume but slight rise of 6.5 per cent in value against the same period of last year, the General Statistics Office said.
 
In February, the country exported 10,000 tons, earning US$21 million.
 
According to the General Customs Department, Vietnam shipped 5,549 tons of pepper to 24 main markets in the first month of the year, raking in US$14.61 million.
 
Biggest importer of Vietnamese pepper in January was the U.S. with 759 tons worth US$2.33 million, accounting for 13.68 per cent of the country’s total export volume and 15.9 per cent of value.
 
The Vietnam Pepper Association said the country now has 49,000 hectares of pepper cultivation. The country may reap 95,000 tons of pepper in 2009, and it will ship 100,000 tons.
