70 per cent of Vietnam’s IPs, EPZs Lack Centralized Wastewater Treatment Systems

Up to 70 per cent out of 219 operating industrial parks (IPs) and export processing zones (EPZs) in Vietnam reportedly lack centralized wastewater treatment systems.
 
The alarming figure was released by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment at a conference on environmental crime prevention held in Ho Chi Minh City June 8.
 
EPZs and IPs are estimated to discharge 750,000 cubic meters of untreated wastewater a day, the Ministry of Police’s the Environment Police (C36) said.
 
Vietnam is forecast to face 4.8 million tons of solid waste a year by 2010, including 630,000 tons of harmful waste, the World Bank said.
 
The Southeast Asian country has found 800 violations of environment protection regulations between 2007 and 2008 and imposed fines of VND130 billion (US$7.9 million). (Vietnam Agriculture, Youth)
