Vietnam to Have 10 International Airports
Vietnam will have 10 international airports by 2010, including four in the south, four in the central region and two in the north, according to the planning announced by the Ministry of Transport.
Can Tho International Airport became operational in early 2009. A plan to construct the new Phu Quoc International Airport by 2030 was submitted to the government for approval.
Long Thanh International Airport, invested with US$5 billion, is expected to be one of the largest international airports in the region. The airport, built on a site of 5,000 hectares, is capable of greeting 100 million passengers a year and transporting 5 million tonnes of goods a year.
In the central region, apart from two operating international airports of Da Nang and Phu Bai (Hue City, Vietnam will build two others, namely Cam Ranh (Nha Trang City) and Chu Lai (Quang Nam province).
Cat Bi International Airport in the northern city of Hai Phong will be upgraded to receive 2 million passengers and 17,000 tonnes of cargo a year by 2025. The total investment capital is VND1,700 billion for a 500-ha airport.
