Vietnam exported 13.5 million tons of coal valued at VND12 trillion (US$673.7 million) in the first seven months of this year, equal to the same period last year, a leader of the state-owned Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) said.

The coal was mainly shipped to China, Japan, Thailand, India, Malaysia, South Korea and Europe between January and July, said Vinacomin’s General Director Tran Xuan Hoa.

In the six-month period, domestic coal consumption hit 10.98 million tons worth VND8 trillion, Hoa said.

Vinacomin expects to export 10.5 million tons of coal to China in the second half of this year and over the first quarter of next year, the head of Vinacomin’s export department, Nguyen Minh Chau, said.

The group will sell 2.5 million tons of coal to China through the Van Gia transshipment area in the northwestern province of Quang Ninh by directly signing contracts with Chinese companies.

This year, Vinacomin, the country’s largest coal producer, expects coal production of 43 million tons this year to serve domestic demand and for export. (VNS)
