Vietnam Tea Export Up 4.8 per cent On-Year at US$83M in Jan-July
Vietnam was estimated to have earned US$83 million from exporting 67,000 tons of tea in the first seven months this year, up 4.8 per cent in value and 15.1 per cent in volume against the same period last year, according to the Vietnam Tea Association (Vitas).
In July, the Southeast Asian country shipped 15,000 tons of tea products abroad, raking in US$19 million, Nguyen Kim Phong the Vitas chairman said, attributing the improved sales to a change in consumer tastes and a better quality product.
The average price of tea in the first seven months this year was US$1,248 per ton, 3.94 per cent lower than in the same period last year.
But even at the reduced price, farmers still reaped a net profit of US$100-US$200 per ton from exports because of improvements in production, which helped reduce costs, Phong said.
Vietnamese tea products have so far been exported to 110 nations and territories worldwide with trademarks registered and protected in 70 foreign markets, including Pakistan, Russia, mainland China, Taiwan and Afghanistan.
Vietnam, the fifth largest producer and exporter of tea in the world, plans to export 117,000 tons of tea this year, worth US$167 million, up 13.6 per cent in value. (VNA)
