Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged the Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) to implement the Tan Rai bauxite mining and alumina production project on schedule.

The cabinet leader made the request during his fact-finding trip to the Tan Rai project in Bao Lam district in the central highlands province of Lam Dong on August 18.

The PM affirmed that this is among national key projects, so it must ensure economic effectiveness, environmental protection and sustainable development for the province.

Vinacomin has been carrying out the Tan Rai project worth US$687 million since July 2008 with EPC contracts through China’s Chalco.

The project is designed to produce over 4.3 million tons of bauxite a year in the first phase. It also has a 1.6 million-ton per year ore sorting plant and a 650,000-ton per year alumina production plant.

The Tan Rai project is scheduled for operation in November 2010.

Vietnam ranks third worldwide in bauxite reserves with 5.4 billion tons, with 98.2% concentrated in the Central Highlands region. (Young People, Labor)
