The Government of Vietnam has drafted a regulation that will help trace the origins of seafood through the entire cycle from farms to export companies.

Initially, shrimps and tra fish in the Mekong Delta will be recorded, the paper said, citing an official of the National Agro-forestry and Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (Nafiqad).

Importers have urged the Government to apply international standards to check products more thoroughly and professionally, Tran Bich Nga deputy head of Nafiqad, said.

With processors, purchase agents, farmers, and breeders asked to clearly record origins and addresses, poor quality products can be withdrawn, thus allowing seafood quality to be improved.

An official from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers said with Vietnam exporting seafood to 145 countries and territories, having in place procedures to trace the products would enable the country to build global brands. (Liberated Saigon)
