Vietnam Fish Producers Pin Hope on Domestic Market
Vietnamese pangasius fish producers have pinned their hopes on the domestic market as they find a huge number of potential consumers.
Pangasius products are considered as delicate food and aimed for export. The product export brings in billions of dollars to the country but makes the pangasius production sector dependent on overseas markets.
To encourage local producers to focus their sales at the domestic market, Chau Minh Chinh, director of the International Food and Agriculture Co. (IFACO), said the government should consider taxes on companies processing pangasius for local market. He said that pangasius products for export are taxed lower than that for the domestic market.
The director noted that the domestic market is very potential with the number of pangasius consumers increasing, adding that around 100 tons of pangasius are sold at the Binh Dien wholesale market in HCM city daily.
Chinh said his company sold out 300 tons of pangasius monthly after 6 months focusing on the domestic market.
But to attract more local consumers, the companies should also pour more investment in upgrading technology, building cold storage and distribution network to offer good fish. (Vietnam Agriculture)
