The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) is waiting for the government’s approval to launch four new international air routes in order to save time and costs for local airlines.

The new routes to Laos, Nam Dinh-Vilao-Pakse and Na San-Aksag, will replace the current Hanoi-Siem Reap and Hanoi-France-Russia respectively.

Meanwhile, the Cam Ranh-Mesox (Thailand) is expected to reduce the distance for the existing Phan Thiet-Damvo-Mimux flights and the Phu Cat-Bunta (Indonesia) will supersede the Ho Chi Minh-Hong Kong-Northeast Asia route.

Vietnam Airlines calculated that the new routes can help it save an average $400 per flight and 2,500-3,000 tons fuel annually.

The Vietnamese government is trying to negotiate with authorities of the above foreign destinations for opening the new routes.

In June 2009, the CAAV opened four new domestic air routes, comprising Can Tho-Buon Ma Thuot and Phu Bai-Pleiku, Tan Son Nhat – Baven and Meo Vac-Noi Bai, helping to save thousands of USD for airlines. (Vietnam Economic Times)
