On May 26, 2010, the State-owned Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrading of Cam Ranh Port in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa.

The nearly VND520 billion (US$26 million) project, invested by Vinalines, includes a new wharf, 240 meters long and 30 meters wide, which can receive ships of up to 50,000 DWT. The upgrading focuses on investing in new equipment at the port such as cranes and new warehouses to raise the port’s capacity to 1.5-1.8 million tonnes a year. The work is expected to be completed in 18 months.

The upgrading is designed by Maritime Construction Consulting Joint Stock Company, consulted by Thinh Long Consulting - Construction Joint Stock Company, supervised by Transport Science Technology Application and Consulting Company, and built by Waterways Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company and Phu Xuan Construction and Consulting Joint Stock Company.

This port will serve socioeconomic development and trading in Khanh Hoa province, southern central region and the Central Highlands like Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Lam Dong, Dak Nong, etc.

This facility will help reduce working load for Nha Trang Port, which is expected to be an international passenger port by 2020.
