Vietnam Licenses 44.5M New Phone Users in 2010: GSO
Vietnam signed up 44.5 million new phone subscribers in 2010, a slight increase of 0.6% from a year earlier, the General Statistics Office said in its monthly report.
The figure comprised 43.7 million mobile phone subscribers and 793,000 land-line subscribers, up 2.4% and down 49.1% on year, respectively.
The new subscription raised the total number of mobile phone users in Vietnam to 153.7 million and landline ones to 16.4 million at end-December, up 39.8% and 5.1% from a year earlier, respectively.
Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) had 88.9 million clients, rising 25.3% from a year ago, including 77.2 million mobile users, up 29.9% on year, the GSO said.
By end-2010, the number of internet users nationwide is estimated to have risen 20.2% to 27.4 million, while internet subscribers are estimated to have increased 27.4% to 3.77 million.
Total net revenues of the post and telecom industry in 2010 are estimated at VND138.8 trillion ($7.12 billion), rising 26.5% on year, including VND90 trillion made by the VNPT.
The mobile segment is expected to contribute most to revenues of domestic telecom companies by 2015 thanks to the strong growth of 3G services. Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Tran Duc Lai said the telecom industry’s growth may slow down in 2011 due to high saturation rate and stricter management of authorities. (GSO, MIC)
