At present, Phu Gia - Thanh Hai Spa Co., Ltd has become a leading cosmetics company in Vietnam. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8, Vietnam Business Forum reporter Tran Tung interviewed Director Tran Thi Thanh Hai about her career development and her opinions about the development of the Vietnamese beauty industry.

Why did you choose to work in the cosmetics industry?
About 10 years ago, beauty enhancement was a luxury approach in Vietnam. At that time, I was working with the restaurant and hotel industry. When living standards improved, of course people cared more about their appearance. At first, I did make-up to feel more confident, to be loved more by my husband, and to be admired by my friends. Then, I chose this career to satisfy that passion. I was good at painting and arts since I was a child. When I grew up, I always tried to make whatever I felt unsatisfied with more beautiful. My passion for this job inspired me to open the first advanced beauty salon in Hai Phong City. I think I was born to do this work and I was chosen by it.

There are now many beauty centres in Vietnam but Thanh Hai Spa is always a reliable address for customers. What makes Thanh Hai Spa a favourite choice?
A company must create and affirm its name. When customers go to Thanh Hai Spa, they at first feel they are customers, but by the time they leave, they feel they are close friends of ours. Not all directors or owners of beauty and spa salons in Vietnam started as a specialist like me. Normally, they invest and hire professional experts. I encountered numerous difficulties when I quit the hotel and restaurant business to work with beauty enhancement. I spent many years working as an assistant to acquire the skills and techniques, because beauty enhancement was a totally new and very difficult career in relation to other careers. Currently, I am a business manager, but also a teacher at my company. I can substitute for any therapist to take care of and make up customers. Although I am the owner of a popular brand, I am not conceited. When I am working, I am simply a dedicated beauty professional. My enthusiasm has been transmitted to the entire company and all customers are thus satisfied with us.

Recently, your company has been awarded the “Vietnam National Famous Brand Award 2010” by the Ministry of Trade and Industry. What does this award mean to you and your employees?
In business, branding is a difficult job, and the certification of "Vietnam National Famous Brand" is a dream and endeavour of many companies. While Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the cradles of the beauty industry in Vietnam, Thanh Hai Spa in Haiphong City is the only beauty salon in the country to be granted this award. I have the great honour of bringing this pride to the City of Red Flamboyant. When we left for Hanoi to receive the award, I did not tell anyone except for my employees, but I still received many congratulatory messages from customers and friends who watched the award ceremony on live TV. I felt very happy and satisfied. The efforts of me and my staff have been recognised nationwide. Nothing can be happier than that. This is the biggest motivation for Thanh Hai Spa. It is also a strong motivation for me and my staff to do our jobs better.

As an experienced industry insider, what is your opinion about the development of Vietnamese beauty industry?
In Vietnam, many beauty parlours have been set up in recent years. The development of beauty industry entails the development of the export and import of cosmetics, beauty equipment, spa architecture and training. The beauty industry not only creates a lot of jobs, but also significantly contributes to the national economy. And, my biggest concern is how customers can find a reliable address for beauty enhancement. Actually, beauty salons with lower service quality and expertise catch the attention of customers because they advertise more broadly on media. Many small salons lower prices or launch promotions to catch the fancy of low-income customers. Some salon owners have even worked just three months in the beauty career before that.

As a result, many customers lost confidence in beauty salons and Thanh Hai Spa was also affected. To improve beauty enhancement quality and the development of the beauty industry, we should open training schools which will grant working certificates for beauty therapists.
