Continuing the lead in production
In late 1990s, Hon Gai Coal Company was still deep in difficulties, with serious unemployment and low income. Since 2004, the company has made major progress with coal output increasing each year. Even in the conditions of the 2008-2009 global economic crisis, the company continued the lead in production. In 2008, coal output was nearly 1.5 million tonnes; it increased to 1.9 million tonnes in 2009 and to over 2.6 million tonnes in 2010. Since 2009, the company has maintained average growth rate of 132 percent a year.
The company has also developed new projects and business activities improving the working conditions and income of the workers. The average salary of the workers was VND8.9 million a month in 2010 and VND10 million in 2011. The turnover in 2010 was VND2,100 billion with VND95.5 billion in profit. In 2011, they are respectively VND3,000 billion and VND100 billion.
Mr Pham Hong Long, Director of the company, said that those achievements are due to the concerted efforts of managers and workers in reorganizing the production line, introducing mining technology and upgrading managerial skill and workforce.
Besides, Hon Gai Coal Company has increased investment, applied new technology especially in using hydro-power supports instead of wooden supports in tunnel exploitation, motorized and electrical conveyors instead of trucks, and providing gas warning systems and personal kits. In open cast sites, the company invested complete production line with Komatsu trucks of 37-58 tonnes and hydro-power excavators of 3-5 cubic metres upwards.
Towards clean and safe production
Working safety and environment protection are highly observed by managers and workers. Mr Long said that his company is implementing safety programme, each member must be responsible for his own safety and collective safety. Each worker must strictly apply production regulations. Each year the company spends VND25-30 billion for working safety, ensuring a clean and safe workplace. It invested VND14-15 billion for a gas warning system at Thanh Cong, Giap Khai and Cao Thang enterprises. Meanwhile ventilators and noise reduction equipment are installed in coal tunnels.
Concerning environment protection, the company has established an environment protection network down to enterprises headed by a Deputy Director and a specialist who have attended training courses organized by Vinacomin. Existing and new projects must comply with environment regulations provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
In 2010, the company invested nearly VND10 billion for environment protection. Water spraying devices have been installed to control dust in coal screenings and conveyors. Ventilators have been set in tunnels and green parks built in mining areas. Conveyors are being developed to reduce dust. Meanwhile, Vinacomin Environment Company is building five waste water treatment stations in Cao Thang, Giap Khau and Thanh Cong mines, each with capacity of 2,500 cubic metres a day. Clean water supply station and waste treatment network are also built in coal miners’ living quarters.
To commemorate the coming 75th anniversary of the coal industry and miners, the company haslaunched an emulation drive to increase production and issued criteria to honour outstanding units in building tunnels, excavation, selection and consumption of coal. The company has also tried to build coal mines into green – clean – beautiful parks in the region.
