TRAPHACO: Tying Party Building to Business Operations

From a Party cell with only two members who had to join the Party Committee of Railway Health Department, Traphaco Joint Stock Company now has six Party units with 156 cadres, 14 percent of its total employees. During its production and business process, the company’s Party Committee has always played a leading role in directing political tasks in accordance with the Party and State policies and its development objectives. Vietnam Business Forum Magazine has an interview with Ms Vu Thi Thuan, former Party Secretary and Chairwoman of Traphaco Joint Stock Company, on this issue.
After more than 10 years implementing the Politburo’s Directive 07-CT/TW on "Strengthening Party building and mass organisation in the private sector," the Party Committee of Traphaco has attained remarkable achievements. Could you kindly share about this?
Under the leadership of the Party Committee, Traphaco is always a leader in researching and preparing medicinal products made from herbs. It is now running the most modern, largest drug production facilities in northern Vietnam. At the third Party Congress (2010 - 2015), the Party Committee of Traphaco set a target to become a leading natural pharmaceutical producer in Vietnam. It understands and creatively applies Party policies, strengthens Party and company unity, and promotes all resources to realise the 5-year development plan (2010-2015). It harmoniously combines the interests of the State, the company, employees and shareholders. It continuously improves living standards for its employees. The Party Committee will lead the company to move forward to reach national and international levels.
 
The Party Committee also directs the company to actively participate in social activities, help the poor, orphans, disabled people and families of wounded soldiers and martyrs, and provide medical examinations and treatment for the poor and flood victims. It also joins many humanitarian programmes. For instance, it has funded the “Joining hands” programme over the past 10 years, supported “One heart, one world” programme for seven straight years, and continuously financed the “Spring for you” programme. Each year, the donation value amounts to billions of Vietnamese dong. The great positive contribution to social activities made Traphaco a Top 10 CSR company at the Vietnam Gold Star Award 2011.
 
With its achievements and deeds in the past term, the Party Committee of Traphaco was honoured to be named among the 100 outstanding Party units of all economic sectors nationwide. We will continue promoting the Party spirit in the process of international integration.
 
The Politburo issued Resolution 09-NQ/TW on building and promoting the role of Vietnamese entrepreneurs in the period of accelerating industrialisation, modernisation and international integration. As a successful entrepreneur, how do you feel about this resolution?
Resolution 09 is a political event of great significance to the Vietnamese business community and the country's economic development. As you would expect, entrepreneurs are the core force for successful and sustainable development and integration. Vietnam now has over 2 million entrepreneurs who have created millions of jobs workers and made positive contributions to the State Budget. Thus, the business circle must be recognised and appreciated appropriately, and Resolution 09 satisfies expectations and aspirations of entrepreneurs.
 
In my opinion, in the current context of hardship, Resolution 09 makes us more confident. If entrepreneurs only seek profit, they would rather close their business to preserve capital and assets. But, they do not do so because of their social responsibility. Hence, Resolution 09 serves as a lodestar, nurtures the aspirations and dreams of entrepreneurs, and gives timely confidence to entrepreneurs to overcome challenges and devote themselves to the cause of national economic development.
 
2011 was a rough year for businesses due to high inflation and interest rates. How did Traphaco get through such a tough time?
2011 was a difficult year for businesses, particularly manufacturers. An even tougher situation faced us because of our reliance on foreign resources, rising input prices and controlled selling prices. But, we managed to adopt positive solutions to turn challenges into opportunities and overcome difficulties. When 2011 was over, we had completed all economic indicators and implemented two important tasks: Good business performance and good social responsibility. These achievements resulted from our right solutions. One core value of Traphaco is to always uphold and enhance corporate governance by building corporate culture. The firm also trained human resources and improved technologies (investment for more advanced equipment). Thanks to clear sustainability-based strategies, Traphaco has gained fundamental advantages like finance (AAA ratings for a listed company, rated by a government agency). The firm is rated a golden company by banks, which offer incentives for the company like soft interest rates. With its prestige, Traphaco has the sharing of partners and employees and the love of the social community.
