Lasik refractive surgeries are recognised all over the world, and this eye treatment method has become popular in Vietnam too. To learn more about this, Vietnam Business Forum has an interview with Dr Bui Tien Hung, Head of Lasik Department, Hitec Eye Hospital. Do Ngoc reports.
Could you briefly describe the advantages of the Lasik eye treatment method?
There are now four advanced refractive correction methods: Wearing corrective eyeglasses and contact lenses; Lasik surgery (Excimer laser), Phakic-IOL (Phakic intraocular lens) surgery, and Phaco emulsification. Each method has its own advantages and is applied to different groups of patients. Lasik method is suitable for young short-sighted patients because it restores the beauty to the eyes.
LASIK method (Laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) - this surgery reshapes corneas to sharpen vision - has been used by ophthalmological hospitals for over 10 years in Vietnam and become the best option for many people who do not want to wear glasses. LASIK
LASIK is a surgery method using laser to induce external impacts; thus, it causes very few complications in comparison with other methods. LASIK is performed under close supervision. Laser beams are controlled by a computer system manoeuvred by a LASIK specialist. LASIK surgery can correct reflective defects like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Advantages of Lasik surgery method include accurate results, adjustable refractive correction, high safety, shorter surgical time (5-10 minutes), painlessness and bloodlessness. The eyesight is restored after just two hours of operation.
Surgical equipment system decides treatment outcomes and visual quality of patients. In 2011, Hitec Eye Hospital was transferred Allegretto Wave Eye-Q excimer laser system by Alcon. This laser system is most advanced laser system which is very much liked by big laser centres in the United States and developed countries. Hitec’s reflective correction results are far better than others in speed and accuracy. With this new technology, the hospital is a reliable address for patients with reflective defects to sharpen the vision and end wearing eyeglasses.
Using Lasik method to treat refractive defects (myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism), the vision will quickly improve. Do old refractive defects return soon?
In Lasik surgery, preoperative examination is very important. No cases of complications have been recorded at Hitec since this method is deployed. Preoperative check helps anticipate surgery outcomes. Lasik surgery is absolutely safe, highly effective and stable. Myopia return is rare, except for excessively high myopia or excessively thin corneas. These special cases are clearly explained by us and advised to apply suitable methods.
After an eye surgery, postoperative care and check are very important. What medicines should patients take to maintain their vision?
After the surgery, patients can use medicines rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Lutein and Zeaxanthine to sharpen and maintain the vision. This vitamin addition is normal even to refractive-free eyes to increase the vision. Using artificial tears help regenerate and stabilise corneal after the surgery.
The prevalence ratio of refractive defects is getting higher but the costs for this modern surgery are not affordable for all patients. Does Hitec Eye Hospital have any solutions to support poor patients?
Hitec regularly organises free eye checks for the elderly, veterans and poor children. It cuts 20 percent of surgery fees during holiday events.
