Cam Ranh Port Asserting its Key Role as a Regional Traffic Hub

Cam Ranh Port was officially established on November 1, 1991 on the basis of Ba Ngoi Port managed by Khanh Hoa province. To promote its strengths and potentials, on October 31, 2007, the Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) took over Ba Ngoi Port and renamed it to Cam Ranh Port. The Cam Ranh Port Co., Ltd was established and affiliated to Vinalines. After this important milestone, Cam Ranh Port has continuously expanded marketing, particularly to the Central Highlands region where there are a plenty of agricultural product sources to carry through the port. With its dynamism in seeking partners, building networks, promoting research and developing the market, Cam Ranh Port has gradually asserted its brand name in the country and its important role of traffic hub which is connected with Cam Ranh Airport and Central Highlands provinces.

 

It is obvious that leading ports in the world have chosen container services and the containerisation trend is in vogue. Seeing the trend, Cam Ranh Port has continually invested, expanded and modernised its infrastructures to serve container ships better. With its centralised investment, Cam Ranh Port has 182-metre long wharfs with a total length of 308 metres. With the depth of 11.6 metres, it can support ships of 30,000 tonnes. Supporting equipment like warehouses is also invested together with the port upgrading, bringing the total handling capacity to 1.5 million tonnes a year. Cargoes handled at the port are various. Apart from two major traditional sources of sand and salt, the port now handles other goods like cement, coal, fertilises, pulp, food , clinker, steel and equipment. The cargo throughput increased year after year, from 95,000 tonnes in 1992 to 1.49 million in 2010 and 1.553 million tonnes in 2011 - higher than the designed capacity. In 2012, Cam Ranh Port is determined to serve nearly 1.8 million tonnes of cargoes. Revenues rise 27 percent a year on average. In 2011 alone, revenues sales reached VND75 billion, an increase of 64 times over 1992. Profit growth is 25 percent annually. Livelihoods of employees are increasingly improved.

 

Positive growth of Cam Ranh Port are resulted from many factors, including the timely guidance of the port leaders, technological innovations, service manner, infrastructure upgrading investment, human resource training, and technical innovation which give a boost to productivity and service quality.

 

Mr Pham Huu Tan, General Director of Cam Ranh Port Co., Ltd, said: Cam Ranh Port is allowed by the Vietnam National Shipping Lines to invest in a general and container wharf with a length of 240 metres and a breadth of 30 metres capable of receiving vessels of 50,000 tonnes, a buoy pier for liquid cargo vessels of 5,000 tonnes, four warehouses with a total area of 12,000 square metres, and 60,000 square metres yards. To bring Cam Ranh Port to a new level, serve customers better and integrate successfully into the world, the port authority will continue exerting internal resources, dynamism and creativity to operate the port at full capacity, diversify cargoes, develop port services and train workers to meet the demand. According to the development roadmap to 2020, Cam Ranh Port will transform current general wharves into container wharves, build a new wharf for general cargo, build a complete container yard, container repairing facility, and invest in handling technologies to serve ships of 50,000 tonnes. At that time, the capacity will exceed 5 million tonnes a year.
