Agricultural Sector Reaches US$25.5 Billion Export Turnover

The latest statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development show that agriculture, forestry and aquaculture export turnover in November 2013 reached an estimated US$2.42 billion, bringing the figure so far this year to US$25.25 billion, a 1.5 percent increase against one year previous.

Of this figure, exports of major agricultural products were valued at US$12.05 billion, down 11.3 percent, while export turnover of aquaculture and forestry posted US$6.11 billion (up 9.1 percent) and US$5.12 billion (up 15 percent), respectively.

Coffee continued to see the biggest reduction in both export volume and value, down 24.4 percent and 24.8 percent, respectively.

In November 2013, the country exported 441,000 tonnes of rice, worth US$209 million, raising the total for Jan-Nov 2013 to 6.29 million tonnes, valued at US$2.78 billion, down 16.1 percent in volume and 18.8 percent in value compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, tea, rubber and manioc also witnessed decreases in export volume and value. On the contrary, on growth impetus from the last few months, cashew, wood and pepper enjoyed considerable rises in value.

Cashew export volume in November reached 23,000 tonnes, valued at US$144 million, raising the total so far this year to 238,000 tonnes, worth US$1.49 million, a year-on-year rise of 17 percent in volume and 10.1 percent in value.

Similarly, rubber export volume this month was 120,000 tonnes, worth US$279 million. With the estimate, the country will reach 955,000 tonnes of rubber shipped overseas, valued at US$2.24 billion, a 5.4 percent rise in volume but a 12.2 percent drop in value.

Seafood exports continued their impressive growth rate of 9.1 percent to hit US$6.11 billion in value.

The US held its position as the largest importer of Vietnamese seafood, accounting for 22 percent of the country’s total value. It was closely followed by China, Canada and Thailand, gaining growth of 58.6 percent, 28.2 percent and 8.3 percent respectively over the past year.
