Vietnam, one of world’s fastest-growing telecom and Internet user countries, expects to gain VND55 trillion (US$3.5 billion) in revenues from the Internet and telecom services by 2010, said the National Institute for Posts and Telecommunications Strategy (NIPTS).

To reach the target, the country will diversify its high quality Internet and telecom services and reduce fees of these services to a level that is equal to or even lower than those in regional countries.

Vietnam will also focus on developing IT and telecom infrastructure nationwide, especially for bandwidth development.

As of November, Vietnam had around 14.6 million telephone subscribers, including 8.2 million mobile phone subscribers, and 2.7 million Internet subscribers.

By 2010, the communist-ruled country targets to have a telephone-density of 32-42 per 100 people and 8-12 Internet accounts per 100 people, with 25 per cent of the population able to access the Internet.
